On-street and door to door fundraising
You may have noticed our dedicated fundraisers on the street and
operating door to door recently. The purpose of this is to give you the
opportunity to learn more about Barnardos and become a Barnardos Childhood Friend.
Why do you use on-street fundraisers?
Street fundraising is a very important method of fundraising for Barnardos as it allows us to interact with you – our valued supporters - face to face. It’s a great way for potential donors to find out and learn more about Ireland’s leading children’s charity.
Street fundraisers are also crucial to signing up the regular monthly donors that enable Barnardos to plan ahead and invest in our programmes. This ongoing support is vital to our continuing work with some of the most vulnerable children and families in Irish society.
Why should I sign up with a street or door-to-door fundraiser?
Barnardos relies on income raised through fundraising to support our services. In 2012 we need to raise over €7 million to ensure we can continue to work with the children and families who need it most in over 40 Barnardos project centres all over the country. By signing up to become a Barnardos Childhood Friend and committing to a monthly donation, you will be giving us a very important kind of support that we can count on, and you will be helping us to protect childhood and enable children at risk to become happy, fulfilled adults.

Please note our street and door to door fundraising teams are unable to accept cash donations. If you wish to make a cash donation, please visit our donation page.
How does it work?
Barnardos enlists the services of a company called Total Fundraising who specialise in on-street and door to door fundraising. These methods of fundraising are not only cost effective and efficient ways to recruit long term supporters; they are some of the most successful ways of attracting more young people to support our worthy cause.
Our street fundraisers are not paid a commission by Barnardos. Out of every euro donated, Barnardos currently spends 90 cent on our work with children and families and 1 cent on governance; 9 cent is invested in generating funds. See our latest Annual Review for further information.
Barnardos is part of a self regulatory group of charities called the Irish Fundraising Forum for Direct Recruitment (IFFDR) in which all members agree to adhere to a code of practice, which you can read on the IFFDR website.
Feedback
We welcome feedback from the public to help improve our on-street and door to door fundraising.
Barnardos street fundraisers will be clearly identifiable with Barnardos t-shirts or jackets and will be carrying ID. There is a strict code of conduct that they must follow, and if you encounter any Barnardos street fundraisers who breach this code, please let us know immediately. Our street fundraisers are permitted to use various approaches to introduce themselves to people on the street, such as eye contact, a friendly greeting, a polite handshake, a smile. They are not permitted to obstruct people or invade their personal space, to take or hold on to people’s hands against their will and they are required to be polite at all times.
If you personally have an encounter with one of our fundraisers where their behaviour breached the code of conduct, please let us know immediately using the contact details below. Any problems or violations are taken extremely seriously and fully investigated, and fundraising team members that breach the code are disciplined and removed from the teams if necessary.
Barnardos and Total Fundraising reserve the right to refine the approaches used by on-street and door to door fundraisers from time to time: please check the code of conduct for the most up-to-date information.
