Volunteering opportunities
We have been very lucky in Barnardos to have so many people interested in volunteering with us, and so are not always in a position to offer a volunteer place immediately. We encourage people to register with us for upcoming roles in the following areas:
Fundraising/ Events Management Volunteering
We are always looking for volunteers to help us with fundraising efforts. We know that not everyone can commit to volunteering on an on-going basis so we have a register for weekend and evening volunteering opportunities on a more flexible basis. Once you register with us, we will keep you informed of upcoming fundraising events (e.g. marathons, Santa Dash, sponsored walks etc) and if you can help us out you let us know! To register pop us an email to get more information.
Barnardos Charity Shops and Point Village Market
The money raised in our shops helps fund our work with vulnerable children. Barnardos shops sell high quality second –hand and brand new goods. Volunteers assist with sorting donated stock, preparing it for sale, customer sales and service, security and shop display. Our shops are open Monday to Sunday and are based in Clondalkin, Rathmines, Dun Laoghaire, Carlow, Wexford and Cork. The Point Village Market is open Saturday and Sundays at the Point Depot.
Barnardos Centres
Barnardos operates family support centres across Ireland aimed at families who are experiencing difficulties. Each centre provides services that are based on local needs. Volunteers work alongside staff to run services such as parent and toddler groups, after school services, summer programmes and homework groups.
*Please note volunteers working in our children’s services go through a vetting process.
Barnardos Bereavement Helpline Service
This unique service is for children who have lost someone close to them. Volunteers operate the daily telephone service, open from 10am-12pm Monday to Friday. Full training and support is provided. The service recruits volunteers occasionally.
Volunteer Literacy programme
The Wizards of Words programme provides one-to-one reading support to children in 1st and 2nd class who are experiencing reading difficulties in the school environment. Recruitment and training of volunteers takes place before the beginning of the school year and the programme is open to volunteers who are 55 years and older. This intergenerational programme model is based on US research of the Experience Corps programme which has demonstrated positive outcomes for children’s reading ability and for the volunteers too.
Administration
Occasionally we require volunteers to support our offices and administrative functions. Flexible hours and days available.
Corporate Volunteer Challenges and Team days
Staff from different companies can help Barnardos simply by getting together for a team day challenge- for example painting and decorating our services or digging and planting a garden.
