Volunteering Opportunities

Barnardos volunteers play a key part in the delivery of our services. In addition, they raise funds; provide office support, and a variety of professional expertise at all levels in the organisation to help us achieve better outcomes for children. Without their dedication and generosity, we could not do the work we do.

Simply by giving of your time you will make a difference in a vulnerable child’s life and will be helping us to achieve our vision – an Ireland where childhood is valued and all children and young people are cherished equally.

The following are the volunteer opportunities we currently have available.

Volunteer with Children

Barnardos Wizards of Words - An Intergenerational Reading Programme

Volunteers

Wizards of Words (WoW) is a paired literacy improvement programme for children in first and second class in primary school, involving older volunteers. The programme aims to improve children’s literacy skills to help them become better, more confident readers.

Each child is matched with a mature adult volunteer tutor, aged 55 or over, who will provide one to one reading help two or three times per week, during school hours in the school premises. Training is provided for volunteers, who will work with the children over the course of an academic year, focusing on their literacy and helping to boost their confidence and self-esteem. We are currently seeking volunteers in the Finglas area.
