Volunteering opportunities

We have been very lucky in Barnardos to have so many people interested in volunteering with us, and so are not always in a position to offer a volunteer place immediately. We encourage people to register with us for upcoming roles in the following areas:

Barnardos Wizard of Words Literary Programme

Barnardos Wizard of Words (WoW) Literary Programme is a paired literary improvement programme for children in first and second class in primary school, involving older volunteers. From September 2014 the WoW programme will be based in five primary schools in Dublin. This programme aims to improve children’s literacy skills and help them become better, more confident readers.

Each child is matched with a mature adult volunteer tutor, aged 55 or over, who will provide one to one reading help two or three times per week, during school hours. Training is provided for volunteers, who will work with the child/children over the course of an academic year, focusing on their literacy and helping to boost their confidence and self-esteem.

This intergenerational programme model is based on US research of the Experience Corps programme which has demonstrated positive outcomes for children's reading ability, and for the volunteers too. Volunteers for this programme come from a variety of backgrounds, professionals and homemakers, they are recruited on the basis of having a love of reading and an interest in working with children. Teaching experience is not required but they must be willing to volunteer for up to six hours a week for the full academic year and participate in ongoing training.

Barnardos Centres

Barnardos operates about 40 family support centres across Ireland for families who are experiencing difficulties. Each centre provides services that are based on local needs. Volunteers work alongside staff to run services such as breakfast clubs, pre-school services, parent and toddler groups, after school services, summer programmes and homework groups.  In general, these services only operate Monday to Friday, during normal office hours.

Barnardos Bereavement Helpline Service

This special service is for children who have lost someone close to them. Volunteers operate the telephone service, based from our office in Dublin 1, which is open from 10am-12noon Monday to Thursday. Full training and support is provided. The service recruits volunteers occasionally.

Administration

Occasionally we require volunteers to support our offices and administrative functions. Flexible hours and days available.

* Please note that volunteers working in our children’s services go through a vetting process.

Fundraising/ Events Management Volunteering

We are always looking for volunteers to help us with fundraising efforts. We know that not everyone can commit to volunteering on an ongoing basis so we have a register for weekend and evening volunteering opportunities on a more flexible basis. Once you register with us, we will keep you informed of upcoming fundraising events (e.g. fun runs, marathons, our National 'Buckets for Barnardos' Collection Day etc.) and if you can help us out you let us know! To register pop us an email to get more information.

Barnardos Shops

The money raised in our shops helps fund our work with vulnerable children. Barnardos shops sell high quality second–hand and brand new goods. Volunteers assist with sorting donated stock, preparing it for sale, customer sales and service, security and shop display. Our shops are open Monday to Sunday and are based in Clondalkin, Kilbarrack, Rathmines, Dun Laoghaire, Carlow Town, Wexford Town and Cork City.

Barnardos Warehouse

Fashion and Stock Assistant Volunteers assist us in our warehouse, located in Ballycoolin, Dublin 15, with the management of brand new stock, which is donated to us, to be sold through the Barnardos Shops. Volunteers for our warehouse need to have an interest in or experience in stock management, have a flair for fashion, an eye for what sells and enjoy working a part of a team. The warehouse operates Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.

Corporate Volunteering

There are number of different ways for you and your colleagues to volunteer time in support of Barnardos; depending on the options available at the time of your enquiry. For example; volunteering for our National Buckets for Barnardos Collection Day in September, stewarding at Barnardos events or a team challenge day in a Barnardos centre (specific times of the year only).

Campaign with Us

Another way you could become involved with Barnardos is by joining our Advocacy Campaign listing.  By getting the latest campaigns news from our Advocacy team you could help us work for children's rights.  Joining our campaigns listings is a simple and direct way to change things for the better in Ireland by using your voice to speak out for children.  Barnardos runs campaigns that call on our Government to safeguard children's rights and to protect those most affected by poverty.  If you would like to be part of this movement for children, sign up for the Barnardos Campaigns mailing list here.
