The system will enable the Gardaí to seek the assistance of the public through media and information broadcasters when a child is abducted and deemed to be at risk. The children’s charity said that the system is a positive development that reinforces the collective responsibility all of us share to ensure the protection and safeguarding of children in our society.

We Owe it to Young People to Build a Better Child Welfare and Protection System
24 May 2012
Press Release, Dublin, 24 May 2012 – Inadequate resources, inconsistent assessment and recording practices, and limited interagency working, continue to result in failure to properly protect children and young people involved with the child welfare and protection system. Children’s charity Barnardos said that the lessons outlined in the six reports published today by the National Review Panel for Serious Incidents & Child Deaths are well known, but that the learning needs to be implemented as a matter of urgency in the context of the ongoing reform of the child welfare and protection system.

State Must Not Abandon Young People Leaving Care
23 May 2012
Press Release, Dublin, 23 May 2012 – Young people leaving the care system are falling through the gaps because of inconsistencies in the availability and quality of services across the country. Calling for the placing of aftercare provision on a statutory footing, children’s charity Barnardos said that many young people’s futures are being put at risk because they are not getting the support they need to move from adolescence to adulthood.

Affordable Childcare for All by 2014: Wishing Won’t Get Us There, Minister
24 April 2012
The three organisations behind the 7 Is Too Young campaign have said that they continue to have grave concerns about changes to the One Parent Family Payment as set out in Section 4 of the Social Welfare and Pensions Bill. Following a meeting with Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton yesterday, OPEN, Barnardos and the National Women’s Council of Ireland said that they continue to oppose the removal of the lone parent payment once the youngest child reaches 7 years as set out in the Bill. The group welcomed the Minister’s commitment to developing childcare and after school care in Ireland, but said that they were not convinced that quality childcare of the kind needed can be delivered in the very ambitious timeframe being put forward by the Minister.

Utopian Childcare System Unlikely in the Immediate Future
19 April 2012
OPEN, Barnardos and the National Women’s Council of Ireland have welcomed Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton’s, acknowledgment that lone parents should not lose the One Parent Family Payment when their youngest child reaches the age of seven unless a comprehensive system of “Scandinavian” style childcare is in place. However, the three organisations continued to express concern with the progression of Section 4 of the Social Welfare Bill containing the proposed changes to the payment without guarantees in place.

SOS - Save our Seven Year Olds
18 April 2012
Passing the Social Welfare Bill in its current format will push more one-parent families into poverty. OPEN, Barnardos and the National Women’s Council of Ireland have expressed serious concerns that proposed changes to the One Parent Family Payment in the Bill will exacerbate already high levels of poverty among these families and entrench poverty traps that prevent lone parents moving from welfare to work. The Bill is due to be debated in the Dáil later today. The measures proposed means that by 2015 all lone parents in receipt of the One Parent Family Payment will be forced on to Job Seekers Allowance once their youngest child reaches the age of 7.

“Minister, I’m 7. Who’s going to mind me?”
05 April 2012
OPEN, Barnardos and the National Women’s Council of Ireland have expressed serious concern at proposals to change the One Parent Family Payment (OPFP) outlined in the Social Welfare Bill, published today. The three organisations said that measures in the Bill to cease the payment of the OPFP to lone parents once their child reaches the age of 7 were regressive and counterproductive.

The children’s charity also welcomed the approval of €50 million in capital funding to develop the National Children Detention Facility Project at Oberstown. Once in a generation opportunity to get it right for children

Services for children and families in Ireland must work together more effectively if Ireland’s child welfare and protection system is to work better for children. At their conference, Children at the Centre: The Future for Child Welfare and Protection in Ireland, today Barnardos said that the lack of joined up thinking has created silos in service provision that leave many children at sea when it comes to getting the support they need.

DEIS Evaluations Welcome But No Room for Complacency in Supports for Disadvantaged Children: Barnardos
13 January 2012
Three evaluations of DEIS (Delivering Equality of Opportunity in Schools) published today prove the need for continued resourcing of schools with high concentrations of students from disadvantaged backgrounds. Ireland's leading independent children’s charity, Barnardos said that while the reports issued by the Educational Research Centre (ERC) and the Department of Education Inspectorate indicate that implementation of DEIS needs to be improved, the overall findings prove both the success and necessity of continuing supports for children coping with educational disadvantage.

Children’s Futures the Real Victims of School Cuts
12 January 2012
Government must reverse education cuts affecting DEIS schools in the best interests of children living in disadvantage. Welcoming the review announced by Minister for Education, Ruairi Quinn TD, to look at the impact of cuts to teacher numbers in DEIS schools, Barnardos said that the cuts would have far reaching implications for both individual students and society as whole. The children’s charity said it was concerned that these cuts would undo the progress made in many schools working in some of the most disadvantaged communities in Ireland and hinder the effective roll out of the National Literacy and Numeracy Strategy.
