Background:
In advance of the general election in May 2007, we put forward a children's declaration to ensure that the voices and needs of children were heard by all political parties and would be incorporated into the Programme for Government.
Campaign Dates
Spring 2007
What we did
- Examined different areas of children's lives where reform was needed to ensure a better childhood for all children but particularly those living in disadvantage
- Met key political representatives and candidates to ensure our recommendations were incorporated into different political parties' manifestos
- Widely disseminated our Children's Declaration to assist voters engaging with representatives at their door.
So what happened?
- Summer 2007 - some of our recommendations were adopted into the Programme for Government including promise to reduce class sizes and to hold referendum to insert children's rights into the Constitution
- Ongoing - continue to lobby for adoption of our recommendations through different methods e.g submissions, Pre-Budget submissions, presentations etc
