Tax Effective Giving

Your donation is tax efficient

Thanks to the wonderful support of our donors over the last few years, Barnardos can now reclaim up to €760,000 in tax rebates from the Revenue Commissioner.

Under the Government's Tax Effective Giving Scheme donations of €250 or more in the year could be worth up to 72% more to our work with children in Ireland. And the good news is there is no extra cost to you.

If you donated €250 or more in 2006, 2007, 2008, or 2009, all you have to do is simply download the form here, tick the appropriate tax bracket, date, sign and finally return the form to us and we can make our claim.

For donations received in 2010 that are eligible for tax relief, we will send you the forms in early 2011 or you can download the form here, complete it and return it to us.

Because of the severe cutbacks we're experiencing right now, it's more important than ever before to reclaim this money for the vulnerable children we help. And we're desperately hoping that you take the time to fill out the tax form and send it back to us so that we can recover every single cent. What donations qualify for Tax Relief?

If you are a PAYE taxpayer donations of €250 or more in any one year are eligible for tax relief. You don't have to make this in one go -

Donations can be cumulative, so a direct debit or standing order of €21 a month or 5 donations of €50 in one year will bring you over the threshold. Early in the New Year we will send you the appropriate form to complete in order for Barnardos to claim back the tax. Alternatively you can download the form here and send back to us. If you are a self assessed or a corporate tax payer you can claim back the tax on your donation.

Where do I send my completed form?

Send your completed form to:

Barnardos, Christchurch Square, Dublin 8.

Call 01 453 0355 if you have any queries or email fundraising@barnardos.ie.

How does Charity Tax Relief work?

Sample 1: You are a PAYE taxpayer and pay tax at the standard rate of 20%. You donated €250 in the year to Barnardos.

When you sign and return your tax form to Barnardos this donation is actually worth €312.50 to us.

Calculation: Donation of €250 at standard tax rate:

€250 x 100/80 = €312.50

€312.50 - €250 = €62.50

Sample 2: You are a PAYE taxpayer and pay tax at the higher rate of 41%. You donated €250 in the year to Barnardos.

When you sign and return your tax form to Barnardos this donation is actually worth €423.73 to us.

Calculation: Donation of €250 at higher tax rate:

€250 x 100/59 = €423.73

€423.73 - €250 = €173.73

Does Barnardos treat my information confidentially

Absolutely. Your details are confidential to Barnardos and the Revenue Commissioners.

I do not pay tax but my spouse does, can I still claim the tax relief?

That's fine. Because you are taxed as a married couple, either yourself or your spouse can sign the form using either person's PPS number.

I am Self-Assessed/Self Employed

If you are self-assessed and donate €250 or more in one tax year please contact us for a receipt as you can claim the tax back yourself.
