Job Purpose

To provide a safe and efficient transport service to children and families attending Barnardos’ services.

Core Job Requirements

  • To provide a transport service for children and families attending Barnardos services in conjunction with other staff.
  • To ensure the safety of all passages ensuring seat belts are worn at all times, and ensure safe behaviour on the bus and safe practice going to and from the bus.
  • Drive carefully at all times observing the rules of the road and all relevant legislation and regulations.
  • Under no circumstances be under the influence of toxic substances.
  • To ensure the vehicle is maintained in a clean and road worthy condition and servicing is carried out on a regular basis.
  • To maintain appropriate records of all issues in relation to the use and maintenance of the vehicle.
  • To communicate with children and families in a friendly and appropriate manner at all times, taking into consideration the confidential nature of Barnardos’ work.
  • To be vigilant to any concerns regarding the protection and welfare of children and to bring them to the attention of your designated person in a timely manner, in keeping with the Barnardos Child Protection policy.
  • When not required for driving duties to assist in the work of the services, carrying out duties as agreed with the Line Manager.

Requirements specific to the post

  • To ensure First Aid equipment on the vehicle is kept up to date and within its use – by dates at all times, and replenished as required in line with both RSA and preschool regulations.
  • To participate in Certificate in Professional Competence (CPC) training on an annual basis as required by the RSA.
  • To ensure the bus is prepared (including documentation and service requirements) for the annual Commercial Vehicle Roadworthiness Test (CVRT)(commonly referred to as a DoE (Department of Environment) Test).
  • To ensure all vehicle checks are carried out in line with Barnardos Transport Policy and RSA guidelines, and that all records relating to these are completed and filed.
  • To participate in an annual risk assessment of the bus service.
  • To provide transport or collection/delivery duties for other services in the region as required, including regular FoodCloud collections.
  • To have a high degree of flexibility in line with the needs of the work, including seasonal tasks and when assisting staff in responding to children and families’ needs.
  • This role also includes carrying out other duties as required in the service, including light gardening, moving furniture & equipment, maintaining storerooms, light maintenance and deliveries or collections.

  • To participate in regular supervision with your line manager.
  • To actively participate in team and staff meetings and service reviews/ evaluations and to contribute to the development of policy and practice with your area of work and within Barnardos as a whole.
  • To report any area of concern to your line manager in a timely manner.
  • To show reasonable flexibility in relation to hours of attendance to meet the needs of the work. Work during unsocial hours may be required.
  • Have a flexible approach to the work in response to organisational change, development and review of best practice.
  • Participate in and engage with a performance management programme.
  • Identify training needs with your line manager and participate in training opportunities appropriate to the role.
  • To be vigilant to any Health, Safety and Welfare risks in the workplace and bring any concerns to the attention of your line manager or local Health and Safety Officer.
  • To be vigilant to any concerns regarding the protection and welfare of children and to bring them to the attention of the Barnardos Designated Person in a timely manner, in keeping with the Barnardos Child Protection policies.
  • To participate in the efficient flow of information within the organisation by sharing and seeking information as appropriate.
  • To undertake other duties as may be requested by the line manager from time to time.
  • To undertake your work in a manner that is friendly, flexible and informal.

Person Specification

Personal attributes

  • Ability to interact with children and families in a child centred environment.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Flexibility and adaptability is required for this post.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure

Experience

  • 12 Months driving experience of a D vehicle or Public Service vehicle is essential
  • Experience working with disadvantaged children or families will be an advantage
  • Experience working as part of a team will be an advantage

Qualifications

D Driving Licence (Disclosure of any driving offences is required).
