What does Administration Worker at Origins Service do?

This Administration role will support other staff in our Origins service and will work closely with the Administration Worker for Barnardos Post Adoption and Bereavement services which are also based in the same building in Buckingham Street, Dublin 1.

Barnardos Origins service provides family tracing services to people who spent all or part of their early lives in industrial schools and homes. The service is funded by the Department of Education.

Job Purpose

To provide an efficient and flexible administrative support service in an integrated way with the wider organisation.

To provide an administrative support service to Barnardos Origins Service specifically and to provide flexible administrative support as required to the other services based in Buckingham Street.

Core Job Requirements

  • To respond in an efficient friendly and appropriate manner to all communications with the office i.e. post, e-mail, telephone and fax and in person.
  • To provide administrative support to the service utilising relevant IT packages, ensuring documents are presented and formatted to a high standard.
  • To maintain an up to date and effective filing system.
  • To maintain an efficient, accurate and up to date financial, Human Resource and stock/ inventory recording system as appropriate.
  • To gather information statistics and prepare reports as required, including administration of databases as appropriate to the role.
  • To provide administrative support with the daily running of the Buckingham Street building, including building maintenance issues and facilities.
  • To be vigilant to any concerns regarding the protection and welfare of children and to bring them to the attention of your designated person in a timely manner, in keeping with the Barnardos Child Protection policy.
  • The post holder will be expected to assist in a flexible manner to tasks required in the other services based in Buckingham Street.

Requirements specific to the post

  • To assist Origins staff with practical search tasks.
  • To be particularly sensitive to the requirements for confidentiality of information.
  • To be particularly sensitive to the vulnerable nature of the client group involved.
  • To research relevant literature and resources as required.
  • To direct the public to our Post Adoption service as required.
  • To co-operate closely with other Barnardos administration workers based in Buckingham Street, Dublin and Claregalway and provide cover as necessary.

  • Identify training needs with your line manager and participate in training opportunities appropriate to the role
  • To be vigilant to any Health, Safety and Welfare risks in the workplace and bring any concerns to the attention of your line manager or local Health and Safety Officer.
  • To be vigilant to any concerns regarding the protection and welfare of children and to bring them to the attention of the Barnardos Designated Person in a timely manner, in keeping with the Barnardos Child Protection policies.
  • To participate in the efficient flow of information within the organisation by sharing and seeking information as appropriate
  • To undertake other duties as may be requested by the line manager from time to time

Minimum of two year’s direct relevant experience essential.


Junior Cert or equivalent minimum level of education.

The post holder is initially assigned to work in the Origins service in Buckingham Street, Dublin 1 but may be required in the future to work in other locations in the Dublin area in line with organisational needs.
