Investing in Children Reaps Rewards in Finglas

“When I come to Barnardos I want it to be bright and fun”

These are the words of the children attending the Barnardos Friendship Group in Finglas.

Friendship Group is a peer to peer group which gives children in the community a place to develop and practice the skills they need to form healthy friendships

The 9 children who attend Barnardos Friendship Group in Finglas recently made plans to decorate the entrance way of the centre with a gardening project that would welcome everyone into the building and make them smile.

The children chose this gardening project as part of the Investing in Children Award, developed by Tusla, which recognises and celebrates examples of imaginative and active inclusion of children and young people in dialogue and change.

The children who meet, along with two Barnardos staff, every week for two hours decided to set up a Gardening Club to complete their project. Each member of the club had a chance to voice what they wanted to see in the garden from bright colours and bird feeders to the lesser spotted garden dweller, a unicorn.

A little help from our friends

With the wonderful support of B&Q stores in Liffey Valley, Swords and Tallaght the children were gifted an array of plants, plant pots and two beautiful garden benches to complete their project.

The children led the project, agreeing on a design, completing the painting and planting and decorating bird and butterfly houses to turn a dull grass entrance way into a bright and welcoming garden that would provide them with a fun outdoor space and parents with a relaxing place to sit. In May the children presented their project to the Investing in Children judges and regardless of the results they are winners in our eyes.

The positive impact of the Friendship Group on these children was showcased in their enthusiasm to enter the Investing in Children Award and their ability to work together to create something of great meaning to them. Since beginning the Group at the start of the year the children have formed stronger bonds not only with each other but with those outside of the group, strengthening their relationship building skills and boosting their confidence.

Speaking at the Garden’s opening ceremony Aisling Andrews, Partnerships Lead in Barnardos, said “We are incredibly proud of the children in our Finglas Friendship Group for showing great imagination and demonstrating the power of teamwork to create this inspiring garden in their community. And we are especially grateful to the management and staff in B&Q who helped make their dream garden a reality, thank you”.

Dell EMC celebrate Barnardos support with work of art

Barnardos were recently honoured to be at the unveiling of a new Mural in Dell EMC Cork.

The Mural was created by the People and Culture team in Dell EMC’s Ovens site to celebrate their partnership with Barnardos. In December children of staff were asked to enter a colouring competition to create pictures that captured the ethos of Barnardos’ work by focussing on the themes of family and education.

Over 238 entries were received and these drawings were combined to create a beautiful mural now on display in Ovens for all to admire.

“We are incredibly grateful to the teams across Dell EMC for their commitment to supporting our work with children and families”, said Aisling Andrews, Barnardos' Partnerships Lead.

“This Mural in Cork is an exceptionally beautiful way of capturing this support. We were delighted to see so many children were engaged in this project and given the opportunity to express their talent and creativity to produce such a wonderful and lasting legacy in support of Barnardos. Thank you to all involved.”

Applegreen raise over half a million for Barnardos

Barnardos are immensely grateful to the staff and customers of Applegreen across Ireland who have raised an inspiring €527,904 over the last two years to support some of the youngest children we are working with through our Early Years Programmes.

Quality early learning during a child's first five years is a key factor affecting their education and future success. Did you know that by the start of school, children in low-income households may be one-and-a-half years behind their middle-class counterparts in language development, vocabulary and communication skills?

Through the Applegreen Charitable Fund’s investment in vital early intervention and learning programmes they have directly transformed the lives of 200 children and their families enabling them to participate in a year-long intensive, quality support programmes. With every purchase made through Applegreen stores in 2016 and 2017 and every event organised by staff in their local communities they have ensured that children born into social, economic or educational disadvantage will receive the necessary support to reach their potential and experience a brighter future.

Barnardos Early Years and School Readiness Programmes provide children with the vital education, development, care and nutrition support needed to get them school ready and ensure they learn and thrive alongside their peers.

We are so incredibly proud to work with Applegreen, their staff and their customers to make a real and lasting improvement in the lives of children across Ireland.
