2020, What a Year

All thanks to you

Successes from 2020

We are so overwhelmed and humbled by the incredible generosity of donors through such difficult times. As you very well know, it has been one of the most challenging years we’ve ever had to go through. But thankfully, you were there. You were there when it mattered most.

Thanks to you, our services remained open and we were able to adapt to the new needs of some of the most vulnerable children in Ireland and their families. We could not have done it without the kindness and generosity of our wonderful donors.

In 2020, we helped 17,918 children and families in 45 centres.

We delivered 6,387 Activity packs!

During the lockdowns, our frontline staff delivered books and essential learning support materials to help vulnerable children and parents who were finding home schooling particularly challenging, and who may not have had access to digital devices or WiFi.

Thanks to your help, we also supported children who were struggling during school closures with activity packs specifically targeted to their age and educational needs.

These packs included;

  • Worksheets specific to why the child had been attending Barnardos
  • Arts and crafts materials
  • Plant pots, compost and seeds
  • The makings of a birdfeeder and bird seeds
  • Skipping ropes, footballs, yoga DVDs
  • Jigsaws, decks of cards, play dough
  • Chalk and chalkboards

6,482 food parcels and 9,880 hot meals to families

When the pandemic hit, many people in Ireland began to stock pile food supplies but for the families we work with, this wasn’t an option. Being able to do a ‘big shop’ once a week is a privilege only afforded to those with a regular income and access to transport. Barnardos staff quickly began to deliver food parcels, hot meals and basic essentials in order to meet the needs of families struggling to cope. Through your generosity and compassion, we have been able to continue to provide support in this way throughout the crisis.

Expanding our Centres in response to COVID-19

Due to the increased demand to facilitate face-to-face services in our centres, as well as increased cleaning and sanitisation, we were facing issues around availability of rooms. This had the potential to have a direct impact on our service delivery.

Collectively, these three centres support 750 children and parents each year. Thank you so much to all our donors who helped us to expand the physical space of these three centres!

Big Toddle

Our littlest fundraisers have been out in force toddling and waddling to help raise funds by taking part in our Big Toddle sponsored by Pipin Pear – the highlight of our fundraising calendar every year! This year’s theme is Community Helpers, people who help and support us all in our communities every day. At the very heart of Big Toddle are the children who take part and we love to see so many children get involved to help others.
