For the After School Service Barnardos are looking for a volunteer with an interest and / or experience in teaching, childcare or in a social care field for this volunteer role.

What: Barnardos After School Assistant Volunteer, Mulhuddart, Dublin 15.
When: September 2019 - June 2020
Time: Monday and Wednesday, each week, from 2.30pm to 4.30pm

The OASIS (Opportunities Assisting Staying in School) programme works to address and hopefully prevent early school leaving. The After School Service, as part of the OASIS programme, will work with identified 6th class children in a national school located in Mulhuddart, Dublin 15.

For the After School Service Barnardos are looking for a volunteer with an interest and / or experience in teaching, childcare or in a social care field for this volunteer role. The volunteer needs to be available on Monday and Wednesday, each week, from 2.30pm to 4.30pm, from September 2019 until the end of June 2020.

Volunteer Role Description

Volunteer Title: OASIS Programme After School Assistant, Mulhuddart, Dublin 15

Aim of the service:
The OASIS programme (Opportunities Assisting Staying in School) works to address and hopefully prevent early school leaving. The programme is a joint initiative between Barnardos and Blanchardstown Youth Service. The Barnardos Project Worker works with identified 6th class children in two local national schools while the Youth Service worker continues this work with 1st to 3rd year students in the local secondary school (Riversdale). The children and young people attending this service are identified as being at risk of early school leaving for primarily emotional and social reasons rather than due to academic difficulties. The OASIS programme is based in the Barnardos Springboard Project in Corduff.

The After School service is based from Ladyswell National School, Mulhuddart on Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 2.30pm to 4.30pm.

Tasks & Responsibilities:

  • To support the Project Worker in facilitating positive adult-child interaction
  • To help with preparation of the environment, equipment and provision of snacks
  • To welcome children
  • To assist the children in their homework, play and development
  • To work as part of the After School Team
  • To recognise issues and concerns and to communicate these with Project Worker e.g. child development; socialisation; child protection;
  • To share impressions and experiences of the group with the Project Worker following each session

Training & Support:

  • Initial induction of one afternoon
  • Meeting with the Corduff Project Leader to get an over view of the Corduff Service
  • Project Worker will work with volunteer to determine suitable training where appropriate and will provide monthly supervision

Time Commitment:

  • Monday and Wednesday afternoons from 2.30pm to 4.30pm
  • 1-hour supervision per month
  • Willingness to undergo training where appropriate

  • Inclusive of families from diverse backgrounds and cultures

  • Ability to commit and to attend consistently for the whole school year September to June
  • Ideally to have some level of skill and experience in teaching, childcare or in a social care field
