Press Release

A day to remember for you and your feet!

1st April, 2009 - Barnardos is calling on women all over Ireland to join their team for the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon this June bank holiday. With all the talk of economic doom and gloom, people might think that fundraising could be a challenge but with Barnardos help the only challenge is picking out the right trainers and getting in gear for the ten kilometre run.

Barnardos has made it easy for family, friends and colleagues to sponsor the participants through the Sponsor Me option on Barnardos’ website.

Orla Tighe, Barnardos Fundraising Manager explains, “We have made it as easy as possible for you to fundraise so you can remain focused on your challenge. The ‘Sponsor Me’ option on the home page of www.barnardos.ie allows you set up your own sponsor page. All you have to do then is send the link to that page around to people. They can click on to it, sponsor you on-line and leave a message of support. It couldn’t be simpler! The Barnardos Mini Marathon team also have a Facebook group to help women spread the word far and wide.”

Claire Byrne, Newstalk Presenter who joined up to the Barnardos team last year said, “The Flora Women’s Mini Marathon is such a great opportunity to create a truly memorable day, achieve a personal challenge and help the thousands of children in Ireland who live in poverty in disadvantaged communities across the country. I would encourage anyone to join Team Barnardos for a great day out.”

If you would like to support Barnardos and their vital work with the children and families in your community by taking part in the Flora Women’s Mini Marathon this June bank holiday weekend please contact Liz in Barnardos on 01 708 0480 or email fundraising@barnardos.ie. • Send an email/sponsorship envelope around the office on payday!
  • If you ask lots of people for small amounts you can still raise a good sum.
  • Join the Barnardos Mini Marathon Facebook group by searching for the group “Help! I’m attempting 10 kilometres for Barnardos” in Facebook groups.
  • Update your Facebook status with “Support me and the Barnardos Mini Marathon team by clicking here (enter your sponsorship page link)” and this will automatically go to all your friends.
  • Send Barnardos fundraising team fun pictures of you and friends in training in your Barnardos t-shirts to show how hard you are working and they will put them up on the Facebook group!
