Barnardos welcomes news that today Minister Katherine Zappone has secured Cabinet approval to make sure that children will no longer be detained in adult prisons.

Presently there are seven boys detained in Wheatfield prison.

June Tinsley, Head of Advocacy, Barnardos said “Cabinet today has agreed to end the sentencing of children to adult prisons, a procedure that has long drawn criticism of Ireland from national and international human rights bodies.

“The placing of children in adult prisons has always been unjustified and problematic. We are speaking of vulnerable young people here, who have often come from the care system or other disadvantaged situations. These vulnerable young people need appropriate supports and guidance. They do not need to be further disadvantaged and endangered.

“Barnardos welcomes today’s news, and hope that the order is signed swiftly.”
