A Welcome Step in Supporting Young People Leaving State Care

Barnardos welcomes the commencement of the Child Care Amendment Act 2015 which promises that young people leaving state care will be provided with a personalised aftercare plan to identify supports required as they transition out of the care system.

June Tinsley, Head of Advocacy, Barnardos said: "We are very happy to see the Act finally commenced. Young people leaving the care system face many challenges as they transition into adulthood. Ensuring that every care leaver has a personalised aftercare plan is the first step in supporting them to reach their full potential in their adult lives.

"However, sufficient resources must be allocated to ensure that each plan can be implemented fully and every individual does indeed receive the support they need and deserve. Supports must be made available right around the country so that services can be delivered when and where young people need them."
