Teen Parent Programmes
Teen Parent Programmes work closely with teenage parents and their children to promote and nurture their educational, emotional and social well-being. The Service is available to both teen mothers and teen fathers. Barnardos has three Teen Parent Programmes, one in north Wexford, and two in Dublin.
Our Teen Parent services work with young people who become parents under 19 years of age and support them until their child reaches two years of age. The programme helps teenage parents to maximise their potential and reduce the risk of social exclusion and isolation. Some of the ways in which Barnardos provides support include;
- health advice during pregnancy
- knowledge of child development and good parenting skills
- managing peer and family relationships
- securing appropriate accommodation and social welfare entitlements
- returning to education and training
- arranging childcare
The service works on a self referral basis so a parent or young person can contact the service directly themselves and speak with one of Barnardos Project Workers for advice. It also accepts referrals from schools and other invested partners.
Barnardos also has an education support programme to help teen mothers attending secondary school in Waterford.
