Guardian ad Litem

Barnardos Guardian ad Litem service independently establishes the wishes and feelings of the child and represents these to the court. They also advise the court on the child’s best interests. Barnardos is the largest and longest established National Guardian ad Litem service in Ireland. It welcomes the establishment of a nationally organised, managed and delivered guardian ad litem service.

COVID 19 update  – July 2020

Barnardos Guardian ad Litem service have resumed direct contact with children, their families and other professionals as required. Guardians ad Litem are adhering to HSE advice in relation to safe contact with others

Guardians ad Litem will discuss with young people, carers, families and professionals how best to arrange direct contact in a way that is safe for all, as well as continuing to have contact via telephone and video conferencing in some instances.

This policy is reviewed on a rolling basis by the Guardian ad Litem Service Management Team in line with national public policy at present.

What We Do

A Guardian ad Litem supports children to have their voice heard in certain types of legal proceedings, and makes an independent assessment of the child’s interests.
