The Barnardos Guardian ad Litem service closed on 23rd June 2026.

The National Guardian ad Litem Service based at the Department of Children, Disability and Equality (DCE) was launched on 23rd June also.

Any enquiries regarding the appointment of a Guardian ad Litem can be made to the National Guardian ad Litem Service, Department of Children, Disability and Equality.

Barnardos Guardian ad Litem service independently establishes the wishes and feelings of the child and represents these to the court. They also advise the court on the child’s best interests. Barnardos is the largest and longest established National Guardian ad Litem service in Ireland. It welcomes the establishment of a nationally organised, managed and delivered guardian ad litem service.

What We Do

A Guardian ad Litem supports children to have their voice heard in certain types of legal proceedings, and makes an independent assessment of the child’s interests.
