Roots of Empathy – Parent and Baby Volunteer

Roots of Empathy is a programme for primary school children, delivered by Barnardos Ireland. The programme’s aim is to increase empathy in children – the ability to understand how another person feels.

Children learn to care for and respect each other, which leads to a reduction in bullying and aggression. At the heart of the Roots of Empathy programme are a neighbourhood baby and parent who visit the classroom every three weeks over the full school year.

We need volunteer parents and babies for our 2026/2027 school term! Will you be part of the magic that happens in the Roots of Empathy classroom?

How the programme works:

2-4 Months Old

Babies must be 2 - 4 months old between September - November 2026 to take part. Babies born between June - September 2026 are the perfect age.

Start Date

Programmes start between September - November 2026, and continue to the end of the school year - we ask families to commit to the entire programme.

Aim

Helps children learn about a baby’s needs and how babies develop, and lets them observe the loving relationship between a parent and baby.

How did you hear about us?

Roots of Empathy was a brilliant programme from start to finish and exceeded my expectations. Not only did it highlight all the progress my baby was making but it also gave Freddie lots of meaningful interactions and confidence. He enjoys social situations and I think its down to our monthly visits to our Roots of Empathy classroom. Holly our Co-ordinator made the whole experience so enjoyable and always rang in advance to make sure we were both comfortable with the lesson! I also loved an excuse to get out and about and getting all the photos in a book at the end of the programme was great to have for him when he grows up! Thanks Roots of Empathy
