Last year Barnardos children’s charity supported more than 1,000 children across its targeted family support services who had experienced living with a parent with poor mental health. Barnardos children’s charity today launched their 23rd annual Big Toddle. Thousands of children will be putting their walking shoes on to take part in Big Toddle sponsored walks in creches, communities and their own gardens across the country. This much-loved campaign for pre-school aged children raises vital funds every year to support Barnardos’ Early Years Services.
In response to RTE Primetime Investigates programme – Inside the Care System – Barnardos children’s charity is calling on the Government, the Department of Children Disability & Equality and Tusla to put forward an action-oriented plan with clear timelines that sets out exactly how and when the use of Special Emergency Arrangements (SEAs) will end. The children’s charity has long said that the alternative care system is in crisis with a national shortage of foster and residential placements for babies, children and young people.
Barnardos welcomes the publication of the Deis Plus Scheme and the accompanying additional resources set out this morning by Minister Naughton. Barnardos today issued a report on the impact of acrimonious parental separation and inter-parental conflict on children. The report shows children are placed at risk of experiencing trauma, harm and poorer health, wellbeing and developmental outcomes.
Barnardos children’s charity responds to today’s Survey on Income and Living Conditions (SILC) 2025 by the CSO. The charity is concerned to see the number of children at risk of poverty in Ireland increased in 2025 (from 15.3% to 16.9). The survey shows that just over one in six children were at risk of poverty last year. This would have been significantly higher, almost one in five children (19.2%), if it wasn’t for cost of living measures in Budget 2025.
The concerning findings published today by the ESRI show the considerable impact school absenteeism and reduced school attendance can have on academic attainment, future stress and life satisfaction levels among other outcomes.
More than 50 people gathered on the 10th of December to celebrate the official launch of Barnardos services in County Clare.
