Barnardos Child Protection aims to support professionals working with children and families, by providing high quality training experiences which enhance participant’s knowledge, skills and expertise, promoting best practice and the highest standards in service delivery.

Children First, Child Protection Training
Overview
Children First 2017 states clearly that child protection is everyone’s responsibility. This training is suitable for anyone working directly with children and young people.
This aim of this training is to equip participants with the skills and knowledge that are necessary to deal with child protection issues in line with Children First 2017 guidelines, Children First Act 2015 and the Child Care Act 1991.
Method & Materials
This training can be delivered as 1 full day or split over 2 days, with 2 x 3 hours sessions:
10am-1pm or 2pm-5pm.
Group Size
16 Particpants per training
The workshop will involve presentation, videos and question & answers. Participants receive a Certificate of Attendance
Outcomes
Following the workshop participants will be able to:
- Describe what reflective practice is and how it can benefit their work with clients and colleagues
- Reflect on personal attitudes and learning styles and how these impact upon self-reflection
- Explore some models of reflective practice and how they can be applied in a range of work settings
- Identify some basic tools that will assist practitioners to reflect on their work
- Develop strategies to overcome barriers to
reflective practice
Child Protection Training for Designated Liaison Persons
Overview
This training will equip you with the knowledge and skills required to effectively perform the role of Designated Liaison Person.
Participants must have completed one day Children First Child Protection Training in the past 3 years. A strong working knowledge of Children First 2017 is required. This training is based on current legislation, national guidance and best practice outlined in Children First 2017, the Children First Act 2015 and the Child Care Act 1991.

This training can be delivered as 1 full day or
split over 2 days, with 2 x 3 hours sessions:
10am-1pm or 2pm-5pm
Group Size:
14 Participants per training
The course will involve presentation, case studies and group exercises. Participants receive a Certificate of Attendance.
Outcomes
Following the workshop participants will be able to:
- Recognise their legal responsibilities in relation to child protection
- Recognise the signs and symptoms of abuse
- Explain the role of the designated liaison person in supporting staff and managing child protection situations
- Demonstrate how to speak with parents
effectively when child protection concerns arise - Describe how to deal with allegations of abuse against staff members
- Identify best practice in relation to child protection recording and reporting
- State organisational responsibilities re; child safeguarding
FAQs
Will I receive a certificate?
Participants will receive a certificate of attendance at all full day training events, which is based on 85% attendance and active participation.
Can my organisation be invoiced for training fees?
Barnardos will invoice for training when the fee is above €400 e.g. for one supervision training place or multiple training event places at Children First, Child Protection Training or Designated Liaison Person Training.
What if I can’t attend training I have booked?
Cancellations within 72 working hours will receive a refund.

What if I have to cancel Tailored Training?
In order to cancel or postpone a training event, please contact Barnardos Training Coordinator with as much notice as possible so that the trainer can be informed. If you cancel less than one week in advance of the event a charge of 50% will apply. If you need to cancel the event after working hours on the day before the event you should try to contact the trainer directly, either that evening before 8pm or first thing on the morning of the event e.g. anytime from 8am onwards. You should then inform Barnardos Training Coordinator who will follow up with the trainer. If the training event is scheduled for the weekend whoever makes the request should contact the trainer as above and then Barnardos Training Coordinator first thing the following Monday.
What if I attend only the first part of the training?
Participants have to complete both parts of training within 3 months to receive a certificate of attendance. If only one part is completed and the second part is not attended during the following 3 months, the training should be completed in full again.
