The Empower Kids Project, is part of Barnardos’ National Childhood Domestic Violence and Abuse Project funded by Tusla. It is a multi-agency* collaboration with services from around Ireland – and includes the voices of more than 74 children and young people to date who have endured the impact of domestic violence and abuse.

Watch - What the Children Say

Created by the members of the Empower Kids Project sharing their advice for other children and young people living with domestic violence and abuse. 

Hear Me, See Me, Keep Me Safe’, is a short animation created as part of the Empower kids – Children’s participation project 2021.

The years theme was “What matters for children and young people living with domestic violence and abuse” This multi-agency project (The Empower Kids project team) facilitated by Barnardos and together with: Cope Domestic Violence service Galway, Mayo women’s support services, Longford women’s link, Meath Women’s Refuge and Support Services, Dundalk women’s aid, EPIC, Cuan Saor Domestic Violence service, Dublin safer families, Saoirse Womens refuge and Barnardos TLC KIDZ projects across North Tipp, Limerick/Clare, Cavan/Monaghan engaged with 30 children and young people living with domestic violence and abuse, from around the country.

The Empower Kids Project showcased the lived experiences of children and young people through the exhibition IT HURTS: LISTEN TO US. The multi-agency collaboration with services from around Ireland, includes the voice of over 50 children to date who have lived with domestic violence and abuse.

The theme of the video is ‘My life now’ – where children/young people choose to represent a range of experiences, such as the lived experience of Domestic Violence and abuse, the impact of the trauma of their lived experience and/or their journey to recovery.
