This free online course is filled with practical examples, grounded in theory, to help you shape the early years environment to support a tapestry of rich experiences for children. The course takes approximately 45 minutes to complete and there is a quiz at the end of each section.

Course Content

Section 1 explores:

  • The range and nature of environmental influences that impact on the holistic development of children.
  • Some of the main theories of child development.
  • What is meant by holistic development – the course identifies and examines the factors to consider when preparing an environment that supports this development.
  • Frameworks, Aistear and Síolta, that set out how quality can be achieved in early years environments, and relevant Irish legislation.
  • The importance of consultation with children, observations, assessment and review in relation to learning environments.

Section 2 explores:

  • Practical ways early years educators can prepare and maintain indoor and outdoor environments designed to develop and stimulate children’s senses.
  • The stimulation balance and children’s differences in tolerance to stimulation and the need for quiet spaces.
  • Ways to involves parents and the wider community in environments for children.
