Barnardos Celebrate ‘Joan’s 5 a Day’ Achievement!

15 February 2020: Barnardos ambassador Alison Curtis, and daughter Joan (9) joined forces to raise vital funds for children in need. Joan’s 5 a Day challenge saw her walk 5km daily in aid of Barnardos and while her initial target was to raise €250, the Irish public leapt to support her endeavour and €3,545 was raised over 10 days for vulnerable children.

The Covid19 pandemic has placed pressure on people all across the country, and this third lockdown is feeling longer than any of the others. One thing that has remained in the minds of the Irish public, however, is a sense of community and desire to help those in need.

Barnardos Ambassador, Alison Curtis said: “I have been an ambassador for Barnardos for six years, it has always been an organisation that is close to my heart and I truly admire the work they are doing with vulnerable children. The Covid19 pandemic has proved difficult for many, but vulnerable children and families perhaps most of all. Because of this, Joan and I decided we wanted to give something back, to help Barnardos continue to be there for those that need them. And so, the plan for Joan’s 5 a Day was formed! It was a wonderful experience for us both as it brought us together but it also gave Joan the opportunity to learn about life’s lessons and help those less fortunate that her. The support from the public has been phenomenal and has far surpassed what we set out to achieve. Joan is feeling very proud of her fundraiser and what this will mean for children in communities across the country.”

Joan Curtis – Hegarty (9) said: “It was amazing to raise so much money and it was a great experience – thank you everyone”

Barnardos Director of Fundraising, Mary Gamble said: “Over the last year, we have all faced into what can only be described as an unprecedented situation. At Barnardos, we have felt this in our services across the board, with many services being put on hold as we made our way through various lockdown measures. Our staff had to rapidly adapt to meet the needs of the children and families we work with and, thankfully, the public have shown overwhelming support throughout it all. We’re all very proud of Joan and her fantastic ‘5 a Day’ challenge. Not only did she find a fantastic outlet during a stressful time, the money she raised will make a massive difference to our work, and ensure we can continue our vital work. Well done Joan on such an amazing achievement!”
