Post Adoption Service: Workshop for Teachers

The Adopted Child/Teen in the Classroom workshop

A workshop with Barnardos Post Adoption Service

The Adopted Child/Teen in the Classroom-a workshop with Barnardos

The purpose of this hour and a half long training is to explore key issues that arise for adopted –and fostered-children in the school environment, it is designed specifically for teachers and school support staff. It will give an insight into how early relational trauma and attachment affects brain development and why school can be challenging for adopted children. In addition to everyday challenges, early attachment issues can be triggered again for some adopted children as they mature and become more independent. Throughout this training we will explore strategies to support children in your classroom.

The workshop will focus on:

  • Effects of early trauma/neglect
  • Common behavioural and learning issues
  • Classroom strategies for anxious/dysregulated children
  • Adoption identity and stages of understanding
  • Strengthening self-esteem

Length of training: 1 hour 30min

Cost: €150

Location: The training is currently being delivered online to groups of teaching staff nationally
Facilitators: Barnardos Post Adoption Therapeutic team

The service is funded by TUSLA and through donations and training income
